Matt's Original Drawings & Planning (pdf)
DownloadMatthew Hoye is the founder and CEO of Pick Stag LLC and the founder & Executive Director of Sobriety Sounds.
Matthew is a singer/songwriter in recovery. His original idea for Sobriety Sounds was as a physical space where anyone could come at their own convenience to access everything music-related. For months, the only thing he did was plan Sobriety Sounds—drawing maps of the space, defining what services would be offered, and detailing the inventory needed. He even priced out every single item Sobriety Sounds would need, down to the coffee filters.
Once he mapped everything out, the next step was to call every lawyer in Rochester until someone agreed to help form the nonprofit pro bono. Fortunately, Harter Secrest & Emery LLP kindly agreed to help Sobriety Sounds obtain our 501(c)(3) status.
Having zero name recognition, getting a physical space suddenly became a long-term goal. We needed a way to get involved in the Rochester recovery community while serving our mission immediately. This is when our treatment center visits started. Matt and a volunteer typically bring a chest full of percussion instruments into local addiction treatment centers for group jams and performances for the patients.
We still needed a way to perpetually fund Sobriety Sounds, which became the most frustrating part of the journey. Matt’s initial ideas included a Musicians Network—a platform where sober musicians could find paid gigs at local venues through the Sobriety Sounds website. The venue gets a reliable musician, the musician gets a paid gig, and Sobriety Sounds would receive a portion of the payment.
He also created the “Satellite Network” to utilize music equipment Sobriety Sounds already owns. By setting up complete music workstations at partner recovery organizations, Sobriety Sounds could provide clients access to recording hardware and software through paid educational workshops. While these programs provided value, they haven't yet reached their full potential, leaving a real need for consistent, reliable funding.
Enter Pick Stag LLC. Matthew created a patent-pending invention called the “Pick Stag”—a home for your pick that magnetically holds to the front of your acoustic guitar. It holds one light or medium guitar pick securely and features a modular design so multiple units can be connected in a row.
Matthew formed Pick Stag LLC on 12/26/2025 and has committed to donating $0.20 to Sobriety Sounds for every Pick Stag sold. It is his hope that this invention will provide the perpetual funding needed to keep the Sobriety Sounds mission alive.
As our services grow, our needs grow as well. We're in need of a commercial van that we can use to transport all our equipment back and forth from our treatment center visits and events.
